Taiwan carrier TransAsia Airways announced today it is to close down operations with immediate effect. A statement released by the carrier stated it was losing as much as NT$300 million (US$9.4 million) a month. The airline was founded in 1951 and was Taiwan's first private carrier. It has a fleet of 16 aircraft and flies to 27 destinations.
