Image Description:
On 8th May this Boeing 707-300 operating Sabena flight 571 from Brussels to Tel Aviv was hijacked outside of Vienna with 90 passengers and 10 crew members on board. The armed hijackers, from the PLO's Black September organisation, demanded that the plane flown to Lydda airport (now known as Ben Gurion airport). Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan acted quickly, he arranged a rescue operation where 12 Israeli soldiers posed as El Al maintenance workers. They climbed on to the wings and opened the emergency doors. As soon as they boarded, a gun battle between the hijackers and the soldiers began. All the passengers and crew survived, although several people were injured. The two male hijackers were killed, while their female co-conspirators were captured and jailed for life. The hijacked Boeing 707 itself continued to be operated by Sabena for another five years before being purchased by Israel Aircraft Industries. Then sold to the Israeli Air Force, where it served as a spy plane for many years.
