- SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy). SOFIA uses a 2.5 m (8.2 ft) reflector telescope, which has a 2.7 m (8.9 ft) diameter primary mirror. Visible in the picture is the counterweight, the instrumentation section and the pressurized bulkhead with the vibration reduction system. The telescope itself is located behind the bulkhead.
