The Spitfire was the RAF's first all metal stressed skin single engine fighter. It was produced from 1938-47 serving throughout WW2 and on into the 1950s in a series of increasingly capable versions. Over 40 examples are still airworthy world wide.The Mk.XVIII was the final Spitfire developed in WWII, but not delivered in time to see action before war's end. Essentially a refined and strengthened version of the Mk XIV, it was produced in fighter and armed reconnaissance variants
